PETALING JAYA: A rib-tickling tale about a "bear hunter" and a video about a multi-racial birthday celebration emerged tops in the A&W What's Your Story? contest.

Sales agent Goh Lin Lin's hilarious rendition of her childhood quest for the fast-food chain's mascot stood out from the other four finalists in the written category of the contest, which ran for seven weeks.

As for the video category, where there were five finalists (each of whom had to explain his or her visual production), it was 28-year-old Thong Chern Yau's incorporation of the 1Malaysia concept into his colleague's birthday gathering at the A&W drive-in outlet here where the three major races were represented, that bowled over the judges.

Grand Prize: Thong Chern-Yau

Like Goh, Thong, an assistant editor with the arts section of Chinese vernacular, Sin Chew Daily, chalked the highest points in the judging criteria such as introduction, stage performance, story's significance to A&W and story closure.

For their efforts, both Goh, and Thong each won RM5,000, an Acer notebook and a three-day-two-night Berjaya Tioman holiday package for two, inclusive of return flight.

The Temerloh-born Goh, 39, who is now residing in Penang, said she was first entranced by A&W's bear mascot when she was a five-year-old.

"I first saw the mascot in a A&W TV commercial and became so fascinated by it that I got my father to drive me from Temerloh to Kuala Lumpur every weekend, hoping to catch a glimpse of the 'bear'," said Goh, who finally got the chance to pose with the bear at the contest finals at a hotel here recently.

She added that she would be using the prize money to treat herself to regular meals at A&W.

Thong said he would also be using the prize money to give his "cast members", all of whom are working in the same office as him, a big treat at A&W.

"I didn't expect to win the first prize. The idea just came to me all of a sudden as I just wanted to share the happy moments of a birthday celebration with others," he added.

Second prize in the written category went to Zukri Valenteno, 47, for his amusing anecdote about his St John's Institution days when he and his schoolmates used stink-bombs to "sabotage" the A&W outlet in the AIA building in Kuala Lumpur to get back at the staff after being labelled as "cheapos" for sharing a rootbeer.

1st Runner Up: Chua Yi Ling (Me!)

Chua Yi Ling's video interpretation of two lovers reconciling with each other in A&W after the female (played by Chua herself) felt she was neglected by her boyfriend's focus on the World Cup won her second prize.

Zukri, head of corporate communications with the Ministry of Rural and Regional Development, and Chua, 24, each won RM3,000, an Acer netbook and a three-day-two-night Berjaya Tioman holiday package for two, inclusive of return flight.

The third prize of RM1,500, an Acer netbook and a three-day-two-night Berjaya Tioman holiday package for two, inclusive of return flight, went to Nadia Mohamad Hatta (written category) and Beh Yum Li (video).<-- Wrong name

2nd Runner Up: Beh Phaik In

The other finalists -- Ewe Chor Teik and Norashikin Abuk Bakar (written) as well as Mohd Hafifi Abu Bakar and Mohd Shafieq Ishak (video) -- each won an Acer netbook.

Federal Territories and Urban Wellbeing Minister Datuk Raja Nong Chik Raja Zainal Abidin, who was the guest-of-honour, presented the prizes to the winners and finalists.

Joining him on stage were Datuk Abdul Halim Abdul Samad, chairman of KUB Malaysia Bhd (which manages A&W), and KUB Malaysia Bhd's group managing director Datuk Mohd Nazar Samad.

The 10 finalists were shortlisted from an undisclosed number of entries submitted for the contest, which the fast-food chain organised to provide an opportunity for its customers to relive their precious and treasured moments.

Raja Nong Chik mooted the idea for the contest when he officiated at the re-launching of A&W's first outlet in Jalan Tuanku Abdul Rahman in January.
